Converting from One Thread Count to Another
There is a simple formula for converting thread counts of fabric. This is a helpful equation to determine size increases/decreases for patterns you would like to customize to size or specific fabric. For example, if you have a pattern that calls for 32 count linen, with a finished desize size of 5" x 10", and you would like to stitch it on a 25 count Lugana, you will have to determine how much more fabric you will need to complete the project.
Here is the formula for converting thread counts:
Original Count x Original Size ÷ New Count = New Size
So, taking into account our example, the formula applied to the original width would be:
32 (original count) x 5" (original width) ÷ 25 (new count) = 6.4" (new width)
And the formula applied to the original height would be:
32 (original count) x 10" (original height) ÷ 25 (new count) = 12.8" (new height)
That tells us that the new size of our pattern stitched on 25 count fabric would be 6.4" x 12.8". Pretty neat!
