If Hardanger embroidery fascinates you and you have yearned to give it a try but are afraid of it, let's get you started with these three "pre-cutting" bookmark designs. Once you are familiar with the basic Hardanger stitches, cutting will not be nearly as scary or intimidating when you get to bookmark #4. It's true, Hardanger can only be called Hardanger if it involves cutting and removing of certain fabric threads. In reality, the first three bookmark designs should be called "Counted Thread Embroidery" because there is no cutting and removing of fabric threads.
I have chosen to work on easy-to-see 20 count Lugana fabric that have been made into bookmarks. Therefore, the projects are small and very usable when you are done stitching. Sullivans size 5 overdyed pearl cotton and size #8 ivory pearl cotton are used in all four bookmark kits. Each kit includes a lacy edged bookmark, sizes #5 and #8 thread, size 22 and 24 tapestry needles, a needle threader, a color photo of the finished bookmark, chart, complete instructions and illustrations for each stitch.
