Pewter with cobalt blue glass Sewing Compendium is a Victorian "tower type" sewing kit. In the last half of the 18th century it was fashionable to meet and sew with friends, thus creating the need for a set of easy to carry sewing tools. One of the earliest of these was the "tower type" compendium. Such sewing kits were ideal to take along when visiting friends. The bobbin inside has sections for two different threads, and holds two needles. A small thimble is on the top and is held in place with a "Forest of Flowers" collar that twists to close. This beautiful compendium is imported from England. Closed it measures 2.75" tall.
