This is the perfect laying tool; you always have it on you, ready to use, but you can use all your digits stitching and beading at the same time. You can use it to "railroad" or have the plies lie flat. Indispensable.

I've never used a laying tool for my needlepoint work before, but this is great, easy to use, and ensures even, flat needlework (particularly with unusual yarn & threads). The only problem I've had is that the (welded?) needle breaks off pretty easily. I've tried re-attaching it with epoxy glue with limited success.
