I am showing this border design on a pillow, but this would be a nice border for placemats, baskets, or even a nice mini bellpull. This design is worked on 19 count bleached linen from the Danish Handcraft Guild but if worked on finer linen, design will be much smaller. You can repeat this design as many times as you wish to make it any length you need.

Working Instructions:
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and finger-press a crease. On this line, measure down 2 to begin the first satin stitch block, using size #5. In between the satin stitch blocks, stitch the V shapes by using a back stitch technique. I found it easiest to do it this way: I work from right to left, starting at the top of the right side of the center satin stitch block. Upon the completion of the 5th satin stitch in the block, bring the needle out two fabric threads to the left and 4 threads up. Insert needle back into the hole where the top of the fifth stitch is in the block. Bring the needle out four threads to the left. Insert needle back into the top hole and bring it out where the bottom of the first stitch will be in the next satin stitch block, which is four threads below the bottom of the top V. Now insert the needle four thread down and two threads to the right, which will be the point of the bottom V. Bring the needle up into the bottom of the fifth stitch in the finished satin stitch block. Insert the needle again into the bottom point of the V. Bring the needle up at the top of the first stitch in the next satin stitch block. Continue with the rest of the satin stitch blocks.
Continue with solid motifs, box stitch and center V-shaped eyelet. Cut and remove threads in section A. Use two strands of the floss for woven bars, center web and large outer web. The outer web is worked after the center bars and web have been stitched. The outer web is done by bringing the needle up in one of the corner junctions, 1 x 1 fabric thread away from the open hole. Extend the thread to the upper block, coming up from the back into the center stitch. Make the twist like you do on a regular web and extend the thread to the next corner, going down in the hole that is 1 x 1 fabric thread from the open hole. Continue around until all four sides are complete. By looking at the photo and chart, you will be able to see the finished look.
Finish as you wish. I cheated a little on my pillow! I found this nice autumn kitchen towel, cut it in half, hemmed the one raw edge, and then sewed it into a pillow. I hand-stitched the Hardanger band onto the top of the pillow. Have Fun!
