The teaching piece is an 8" doily and you learn all four stitches required. This is the guide for learning the technique. Naversom is distinguished by these characteristics: 1) It uses only four specific stitches. 2) It is stitched on a grid formed by removing threads from the ground cloth. 2) It is worked from the reverse side of the fabric. 4) The design shapes are geometric. Traditionally linen fabric in a 19-40 count was used with two weights of linen thread. Spiral bound, 36 pages. The learning project is a 12" doily on 35-count linen. This needlework technique originated in the Halsingland district of Sweden, where samples have been found from the 17th to 18th century. The word Naversom translates as "Birch-Bark Embroidery", taking its name from the birch bark frame originally used by the shepherdess to support the embroidery as it was being stitched. This is a Pulled/Drawn Thread technique.
