Yugoslavian embroidery shows peasant art at its best, using designs passed down over the generations. It is diverse in appearance and it is hard to document its history. Yugoslavia was unified as a separate country in 1918 and no longer exists. However, this embroidery style shows the influence of multiple ethnic groups from this geographic area. In its history, a rich variety of techniques have been worked on diverse materials (linen, wool, cotton and leather) using multiple sewing materials (linen, silk, metallic threads, beads, shells, and sequins). In all of these characteristics, it reflects the common thread of many of the folk arts-the desire to create beauty in the simple things of life. The fabrics used are Aida or Hardanger where there is a prominent weave with easy-to-see holes. The technique is like pattern darning where the design is laid over the weave of the fabric. It is easy to learn and fun to do. 28 pages. The learning project is a placemat.
